Conventional Honing

Honing is a precision stock removal process for practically all raw materials. The main application is the machining of bores. The goal is to improve the size and shape, or rather, optimizing the tribological characteristics.

Plateau Honing

The advantage of plateau honing is the reduction of oil consumption, better performance and the improvement of run out properties. The plateau structure is created in three phases - rough, semi rough and finish plateau honing.

Nano Honing

Thermal spray coatings in cylinder bores of internal combustion engines are high-performance materials of the future. Energy efficient engines with low friction, reduced length and lower weight as well as lower production costs can be achieved due to the new process chain for the manufacturing of cylinder bores.

Position Honing

The goal of position honing is to shorten the process chain of cylinder block production without loss of final quality. Position honing combines fine boring and rough honing into one step. This improves not only size, form and surface accuracy but also positional accuracy such as perpendicularity and bore position.

Form Honing

The development of new internal combustion engines is based on the minimization of CO2 emissions. These depend on fuel consumption, which in turn is determined by internal engine friction. The goal of formhoning is to achieve an optimized cylindrical shape of the cylinder bore under operating conditions.

Laser Honing

Through reduction of friction and wear in modern internal combustion engines efficiency and sustainability is guaranteed. An essential contributor to this effort is laser honing which was developed by Gehring. Now it is used worldwide in the series production of engine blocks made of cast iron.

Sigma Honing

Sigma-Honing has been specially developed by us to fulfill the requirements of defined compressive strength in the surface of the honed bore. The advantages of Sigma-Honing coexist with the geometric quality improvements, particularly in the improvement of mechanical properties such as fatigue and crack resistance.

Ream Honing

In contrast to conventional honing tools , ream honing tools are preset to the finished calculation. The stock removal is usually achieved with a double stroke, maximum with three strokes. A considerable increase in productivity is the result of this method.

Spiral Slide Honing

Typical feature of spiral slide honing is the comparatively steep honing angle. In addition to lower oil consumption, reduced internal friction is achieved. The process is aimed at engine blocks made of cast iron.

Laser Structuring

Laser structuring is used increasingly to roughen surfaces. Roughening of functional surfaces which require higher friction coefficients, will create a slip free connection between two parts.

    Developed primarily for the honing of engine blocks with bore diameters of 68 - 105 mm, the size of the machine has been optimized. Whether as a single machine or interlinked production line - the modular concept offers maximum flexibility in the configuration of modern manufacturing solutions.

  • PT 600 Transfer

    In the transfer model option virtually any number of spindle units can be installed. Depending on the required cycle time or the number of processing steps involved the transfer module offers an interesting alternative to the PT 600 module.

  • PT 500K

    The PT 500K is specially designed for position honing and therefore the fine boring process is substituted without sacrificing surface finish quality. The higher displacement and cutting speeds as well as the optimized processes increase productivity.

  • Z 750 Modul

    The new modular powertrainhone Z enables the full honing process in one module. Whether three or four-cylinder, efficiency and shorter cycle times for honing are assured thanks to three processing stations.

  • Z Transfer

    Depending on the required lot size, cycle time or number of processing steps, the transfer module option provides an interesting alternative to the powertrainhone Z module. The spindles are optimally accessible through a direct maintenance area.

  • LSR

    Depending on requirements, the LSR unit can be designed as a module variation or as an integrated solution in a transfer line. The precise honing processing of crankshaft bores serves improvement of form- and position accuracy.

  • solohone

    The machine is designed for bore diameters from 60 to 110 mm and can be designed as a single-spindle machine or with a powerful two-spindle variation as needed. Engine blocks of all kinds as well as liners are the main areas of application.

    The single spindle version of the Lifehone series is impressive with its compact design and small footprint. Depending on the machining task and the batch size, this type of machine can be equipped with a fixed or rotary table and up to 4 stations.

  • 2 Spindle honing center

    This option can be performed with one or two honing spindles. Rotary tables with 3 to 8 stations offer place for gauging operations and brushing operations. Compared to the single spindle honing center, this option is 60 cm wider. The two spindles allow for a two stage honing process.

  • 2 Spindle honing center LR

    Our two-spindle model has developed as standard solution for gears. This machine is especially designed for the needs of machining of transmission parts, for examples gears. The integrated gripper transport offers the possibility to cycle gears with different diameters. Furthermore, the user only needs one fixture below the spindles.

  • 3 Spindle honing center

    Our three-spindle lifehone processes workpieces horizontally. The machine is loaded via a handling system with a simple grabber from the pallet. In general, the number of workpieces per pallet is between 5 to 10 pinion gears. The advantage of this pallet method is the shortened processing time per workpiece.

  • Honing Center inner column

    Alternatively equipped with a six or eight sided inner column, you can fix up to 7 honing spindles. With this feature, we can assure short cycle times and multistep processes. Pre and post gauging stations are fixed on the opposite side to optimize the interior space of the machine in the best way possible.

  • Transfer Machine

    The transfer design of the lifehone series is usually recommended for solutions with four or more spindles. Depending upon the desired cycle times and honing process the machine is designed with the correct number of spindles. This design also makes sense when different bore diameters must be processed on one workpiece.

  • smarthone

    The smarthone is tailored specifically towards the needs of job shop production and prototype manufacturing. This machine fulfills the highest requirements in terms of flexibility and economy. In addition to short set-up and machining time, a large emphasis is also placed on ease of use and handling.

  • MicroStar

    In this rotary transfer machine the processes of finishing, grinding and honing are optimally interconnected. The Finishing Operations are performed in one chuck. This feature eliminates the addition of clamping errors and achieves extremely high precision over the whole machining process.

    The horizontal honing machine GNM combines maximum efficiency with a balanced compact design. This allows for an efficient and economical inner and outer honing of precision cylinders and large parts like e.g. precision or telescopic cylinders.

    The new GNM-V is specifically designed for the vertical honing of large dimaters. The machine convinces especially of the machine layout. Small foot print, clear work space and enough space for loading and unloading of heavy parts distinguishes the machine.

Optimal cutting properties for the perfect surface finish

Honing Stone

The basis and most important component of each honing stone is the abrasive. Synthetic diamonds or cubic boron nitride (CBN) in various grit sizes are used.

Metal Bonding

The second component is the metal bonding. This ensures the proper adhesion of the abrasive crystals which are necessary for excellent wear performance.

Steel Blank

The copper-plated steel blank is the third and last component of the stone. It serves as support material for each stone in a drawn galvanized.

Standard Honing Stone

The abrasive layer is produced with a steel blank and the honing stone is soldered or bonded onto the stone holder of tool.

Slotted Honing Stone

The same structure as the standard honing stone but with longitudinally slotted abrasive.

Solid Honing Stone

This consists of an abrasive layer without a steel blank and is also soldered or bonded onto the stone holder/holder segment of the tool.

Honing Stone Type T

Stone with a T-shaped profile with a narrow reduced section and a wide work element in the lower area.

Honing Stone Type G

Honing stone with upper and lower guide arranged symmetrically.

Honing Stone Type P

Honing stone with narrow cutting part and lateral guides which are arranged symmetrically.

Emptying Station

The new Gehring emptying station largely removes the coolant from your parts. The supply of this system from Gehring makes it easier for you to integrate this, simplifies the design and the process flow for your parts.

Loading and Unloading Systems

To facilitate the handling of parts, Gehring offers a specially developed loading and unloading system. To ensure the quality our SPC Shuttle allows safe sampling during operation.
