DAL-E honing tools promise consistent bore quality throughout the entire machining process

The machining of bores with the highest accuracy and/or defined surfaces is usually associated by the specialist with reaming or honing. When reaming, however, the user is quickly faced with limits in terms of precision, surface finishes or even tool life.

During honing, the tool performs several strokes until the required quality is achieved. In this context, Nagel has recently developed honing tools for so-called Precidor honing (single-stroke honing), which are based on Nagel’s proven Precidor tools and can also replace reaming in these areas.
The new honing mandrels with the designation DAL-E promise a high-precision, problem-free and at the same time cost-effective alternative to conventional tools. This results, among other things, from the fact that the tools are adjustable in diameter without the need for costly accessories, thus enabling more flexible use. For example, tighter tolerances (diameter/surface/geometry < 1 µm) can be produced after the reaming process with the DAL-E hondorns, or tolerances in diameter ranges of 4 to 50 mm can be achieved in certain dimensional groups. Another aspect is that it is not possible with reamers to influence surfaces, for example to improve tribological properties. Nagel carries the tools, also known as hondorns, in standard stock; accordingly, fast delivery from stock is possible.

Application quickly and easily possible

Honing is often perceived as a high-tech process involving large quantities (including cylinder bores in engine blocks). The core target group for the new Hondorne is also found in contract manufacturing or in mechanical workshops with conventional machines. No matter whether lathes, milling and honing machines, machining centers or even hand drills: DAL-E mandrels are quick to set up, easy to handle, and even diameter changes are quick and easy. This is mainly due to the simple design of the tool. No alignment is required and the time saved when using the new Hondorns is therefore enormous. As a rule, the specified manufacturing tolerances can be maintained from the start.

Customized, costs reduced

The new DAL-E mandrels are true high-strength, strip-tipped Precidor tools. It can be used to machine almost all materials, such as ceramics, soft and hard materials, through to plastics and gray cast iron. The abrasive, the variable diamond grit, the grit sizes, the bonding system and others are adjusted by the company to individual customer requirements or to material, surfaces and allowances. In this way, very high process-reliable production tolerances can be achieved.
Michael Nagel, Sales Manager: “The new mandrels with the designation DAL-E promise a high-precision, problem-free and at the same time cost-effective alternative to conventional tools”.

“Compared to conventional cutting tools, this also enables machining in one clamping or complete machining due to the high-strength diamond cutting coatings,” says Michael Nagel, sales manager. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the positioning via the axis is already defined in the preparation and the workpiece can thus be manufactured in one clamping across all machining processes. On the other hand, the variable diamond grit promises clear advantages in terms of tool life compared to geometrically defined cutting edges.
The concrete cost advantage compared to the use of reamers also results from the following consideration: DAL-E hollow drills from Nagel replace reamers due to the variable diameters with multi-stage tool set. Regardless of the service life, their use pays off even with small batch sizes.

All in all, according to Nagel, this means that the new DAL-E honing tools promise consistent bore quality throughout the entire machining process in terms of dimension and surface, offer greater reliability in the area of surface quality thanks to the variable diamond grit, and reduce the cost per bore. Nagel carries these horns in standard stock; accordingly, fast delivery from stock is possible.
